Past and Present
At one time there were eight species of tigers, but three species became extinct in the twentieth century. The Bengal Tiger now is the largest population of tigers left. Over the last 100 years poaching, hunters, and forest destruction have reduced their population. Last year there were less than 3,200 tigers, and now there are less than 2,500 tigers.
